APOLLO BAY ADVENTURE!! Empty APOLLO BAY ADVENTURE!!

Post by mr suzuki Wed Jun 12 2013, 17:11

Hi all

Well it was much too cold and wet to take the bikes down so we took cars instead.
Over the Queens birthday weekend we went back to our fave spot Apollo Bay staying at the YHA as we usually do which is much more like a nice motel than a traditional YHA. we tried to go back to the lovely organic cafe in Beech Forest (you will remember it from last year Trevor!) but sadly it was closed owners away for 4 weeks on holidays.
But all was not lost!! My bikechickadee remembered reading about a brewery in FORREST just a bit further up the road. Heading in this direction we took a back road (reading from a tourist map: first bad move!!) It was a dirt loggers road and once on it all the signs said Dry weather rd which it most definitely was not a dry day, despite fearing the Hyundai Excel would become bogged at any moment we eventually made it through 20km of muddy back forest rd it looked like my Hyundai had done a stage of the World Rally championship.
Finally we came across the Forrest brewery which really is pretty much the only reason u might wish to visit Forrest which is approx 40km south of Colac.
What a brilliant find. It has an on site boutique beers a perfectly cooked and fully loaded steak sandwich with hand cut chips $21 add a pot of their beer $25 magic!!
There was also a selection of mouth wateringly (non fattening) brownies cakes and slices for $4:50 each plus cascade soft drinks as well.
We had big appetites as we had just finished a 3:15 hr bushwalk from Blanket Bay to Parker inlet a magical but very tiring and challenging walk.
We had such a good time at the brewery we forgot to get back to AB for the free band playing at the local RSL.
another great walk is from Marengo to shelly beach about 2:30 hrs long goes along the cliff tops and also meanders along the beach too.
The purpose of telling you this is we enjoyed it all so much we thought we might organise another Ulysses trip down there again and of course encompassing a ride to the famous Forrest brewery for lunch with a few cleansing ales!! Naturally we will wait for warmer weather so if you want to join us then be Watching the Ride Calendar for later in the year.!! Smile))
