2019-Reefton Pub Ride - 16th October.

The internet promised today would be a 'trial of rainwear', I know the results from a similar trial returning from Phillip Island a few weeks ago, helmet, raincoat, rain trousers, gloves and boots all failed, thoroughly soaked. Fortunately there was no such test, the rain was intermittent and no more than a light drizzle.

Starting from Brunch Cafe with eight riders on six bikes with and visitors at Brunch, Ian McKenna led the ride with Karen & Steve Griffiths as tail end riders. We took the Mount Dandenong Road then Olinda Road to Monbulk and we stopped at Silvan Reservoir. The dull morning meant there wasn't very much traffic.

We took Queens Road and Beenak Road to Yellingbo. I found stopping at Yellingbo wasn't needed as a rider who was meeting us here had already phoned to bail out. Warburton Hwy was followed to Launching Place. A quick loop on Barak Road and Station Road following the old railway took us to Millgrove.

We rested and played for a while at Wesburn Park before taking the Old Warburton Highway to Warburton which felt a bit uncomfortable in the wet conditions, and then Riverside road got us easily out of town. Rejoining the Highway for the last few kilometres we stopped and visited the Little Peninsula Tunnel near McMahon's Creek.

A steep walk didn't give us a good view of the tunnel which was built to drain the river to support gold mining in the river. The nearby Big Peninsula Tunnel would have been a better option but the humid weather wasn't encouraging of walking, so we gave it a miss.

Next stop was the Reefton Hotel at McMahon's Creek. This was a nice atmospheric Pub which gave us good service and good food. After lunch we rode straight for home on a great day of riding, well ahead of the real wet weather that was promised late in the afternoon.
