Bob and Kathys New Year Ride Empty Bob and Kathys New Year Ride

Post by denise greenhalgh Thu Jan 04 2018, 11:00

Once again Bob and Kathy McArthur organized a fantastic New Year Ride.  Henry and Marjorie were Tail End Charlie for most of the ride with Ferri and Anne doing it for some of the time.  We left Brunch Café at 8.00am on Thursday 28th December, our destination was Victor Harbor.  First night was a motel in Hamilton where we were joined by Marlene and Stan from Colac who stayed with us for the rest of the trip.  Next day we travelled to Kingston SA where we enjoyed the rest of the day and evening there.  Accommodation was very good, we enjoyed the closed in patio area for our happy hour.  Helena and David (our ex National President) and Jerry and Heather Kroon from Limestone Coast group joined us for dinner as well.  After an enjoyable stay there, we headed off early next morning towards Victor Harbor.  Bob had booked us in to the Anchorage Hotel in Victor Harbor, right in the centre of town, with views of the sea from our windows, and for some lucky people, their own verandah overlooking the sea.  We were lucky to have a spa room which was great.  A few of us went to Goolwa on the steam train on the second day there, great views as the train travelled along the coast for part of the way.

New Years Eve was spent at the hotel where we enjoyed dinner, not too many stayed awake to bring in the New Year, as South Australia is half an hour behind Victoria, some of us went by Victorian time. We aren't as young as we used to be!!

New Years Day Bob had booked us in for lunch at a winery a bit up the road which was very enjoyable.

On 2nd January, we left Victor Harbor and headed towards the Nature Lodge at Nhill, in the Little Desert.  Accommodation was good as was the barbecue dinner.  A few of us went on a walk to the wild life enclosure hoping to see some Mallee Fowl.  The enclosure was closed but the kind guide came along later and let us in to have a look.  We were very lucky to see some bentongs being fed and then a rare treat to see a few Curlews, which apparently are pretty rare to see, when they are crouched down they look like a lump of bark.

On 3rd January, up early again and on the road toward home.

We thank Bob and Kathy for a fantastic New Year trip and appreciate all the work that goes in to organizing these rides.

Marlene and Stan from Colac had seen the ride advertised on our website and had e-mailed us to see if they could join the trip.  They thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the companionship of our group.
