Looking forward to the photos JC.
I gave it some thought as to whether I would ride down for the weekend too. I had Derek inviting me to come down but finances were a bit tight at the time so unfortunately I had to give it a miss.
I will be making a more assertive attempt at getting there next year if all goes well.
I've got a choice of two bikes now so that will make it a bit more difficult to work out which one to ride Laughing

Very envious John - I love that end of the country (we only rode the Lions Road once - the first time we took a wrong turn on to the Lindesay Hwy and the 2nd time a bridge was washed out). Pity about the Qld Police. It isn't fun being held up for no good reason. No doubt the mags will write them up in infamy. I love the roads you chose for the return trip too.

Lions TT 4-6 October 2014

Post by JgC on Wed Oct 08 2014, 21:27

The lions TT was held on the Lions Rd between Rathdowney Qld and Kyogle in NSW for the first time on the weekend .It was a great success .Sure there were a few things that could have been done better and I'm sure the organisers will learn from this weekend and next year will be bigger and better.

I left Melbourne on Thursday Night and stopped overnight just this side of Holbrook at the Womargama Pub . (Good food ,cold grog and a warm bed !) A fairly decent frost in the morning was followed by a beautiful day for riding. The Hume and Pacific highways are really easy riding except for the bit thru Sydney and Port Macquarie to Coffs . I had got away from work a couple of hours late on Thursday which I couldn't make up .So instead of rolling in at 5pm I had the Grafton- Kyogle leg in the dark .(Too much stuff bouncing around for my liking !!) I met up with Derek and Keith at the Motel and proceeded to wash down a few bugs with  a few bundys .

Early start on Saturday for the ride up to Rathdowney which is about an hour away via Woodenbong . Weather got very overcast and even a few spits of rain but the sun was out by the time I got to the pub  for breakfast and registration. After a few delays caused by a course ambulance getting lost finding the course ( hope he has better luck finding hospitals !) , scrutineering ( I think this was to tick a few boxes to allow the event to proceed )and a rider's briefing ,we were under way - almost ! The Queensland police had at the eleventh hour refuse a road closure for the Queensland part of the course . I think we all expected that they would be along the course with radar at the ready and it didn't take long for them to get get one .I think almost everyone behaved after that except for the Queensland Police .Stopping all 250 bikes for a not so random breath test was a slap in the face .So there was another 30 min delay and got very hot and sweaty not really being able to get off the bike and park it  .Not happy Jan ( And I couldn't help but give them a well deserved spray ) Finally we made it to the border where there was another group watching proceedings.
So this is where the fun part really begins .The road is closed so you don't have to worry about something coming in the other direction .On the straight sections I stuck pretty much to the speed limit .Most of the road is twisty heaven . Series of corners , left right ,hairpins ,grades of 18% up and down like a huge roller coaster ,railway bridges ,cattle grids and river crossings on single lane timber bridges  .A real buzz !!
I met up with Derek and Keith at the finish where after watching a few more riders come in we headed back in to town for a feed and and look at the other events in town.
My son lives not far away in Brisbane I so I loaded up my gear and headed out ( via Lions Road ) to spend the evening with him  . I headed back to Kyogle early Suday morning and then down to Casino where the sprints were  on at the airfield . Not much action there and decided to make tracks . Out to Tenterfield then Glen Innes , Armidale , and turned off onto Thunderbolts way . Thru Walcha and Gloucester on to Buckets way to Nabiac and back onto the Pacific . Stayed overnight in Gosford and home on Monday by 5-00pm
Big weekend !!
Not many photos of the trip - too busy riding but I will post a few later
